A 10-year G-Sec will exhibit much greater price swings during a 50-basis-point rate hike than a 1-year Treasury bill.
As an analyst, ignoring this sensitivity can lead to significant miscalculations in your client’s portfolio drawdown potential during inflationary cycles.
When writing an investment recommendation, your assessment of interest rate risk should dictate the client’s asset allocation. If your macroeconomic outlook suggests a hawkish RBI stance, advising a client to hold long-duration bonds is effectively recommending they lock in capital losses. Instead, you would advocate for short-duration instruments or floating-rate notes, which adjust coupon payments to align with market benchmarks.
