When assisting an HNI or a corporate client, always perform a duration-weighted analysis before placing the trade. For a client investing in a SIF strategy that holds long-dated sovereign securities, inform them that the effectiveness of their hedge is tied directly to the modified duration of their assets. If the portfolio duration is seven years and the futures contract has a duration of five years, the hedge ratio must be adjusted upward to account for this gap.

Ultimately, your role is to ensure the investor perceives hedging not as a speculative bet on interest rate direction, but as a systematic reduction of volatility. Failing to account for duration variance is a primary source of “basis risk,” where the hedge provides inadequate protection against interest rate shifts. By helping clients align the duration of their futures hedge with the risk profile of their underlying bond holdings, you minimize the potential for friction and ensure their portfolio remains stable during turbulent market cycles.
