Ultimately, time to expiry is the heartbeat of option pricing, influencing both the cost of entry and the potential for profit. When you discuss derivatives with a client, frame the time to expiry as the duration of their ‘protection window.’ A longer window costs more in premium but offers more time for the market to move, whereas a shorter window is cheaper but carries the high risk of rapid decay.

Balancing this cost against the client’s risk appetite and their underlying investment objectives is the hallmark of professional and ethical financial advice.
