To visualize this, consider an investor needing Rs 50,000 monthly from a Rs 1 crore portfolio. If the market drops 20% in the first year, the investor must sell significantly more units than they would have in a flat market to raise that Rs 6 lakh annual requirement. By the time the market rebounds, the investor’s unit balance has been permanently impaired.
This is precisely why financial professionals often suggest a ‘bucket strategy’ or a ‘cash cushion’ approach, keeping 12 to 24 months of liquidity in a liquid debt fund or bank sweep account. By funding withdrawals from the liquid cash bucket during market volatility, the investor avoids selling equity units at depressed prices, thereby preserving the potential for long-term growth.
Ultimately, the sustainability of an SWP is less about the fund’s long-term average performance and more about the timing of market fluctuations. An advisor’s role is to ensure the client understands that market volatility directly impacts the longevity of their fund. By layering the portfolio with debt-heavy, low-volatility assets, one creates a defensive perimeter that protects the equity core from being liquidated at inopportune moments. Proper modeling must account for this interplay between market cycles and the fixed nature of retirement expenditures.
