Accrued interest represents the coupon income earned by the seller from the last payment date up to the settlement date. Because bonds pay coupons periodically, but trades happen daily, the buyer must compensate the seller for the time held since the last interest distribution. A 30/360 convention treats every month as 30 days and the year as 360, while an Actual/365 convention uses the literal calendar days elapsed divided by a 365-day year. Consider an Indian corporate bond paying an annual coupon of ₹80. If you purchase this bond exactly 45 days after the last coupon payment, using a 30/360 convention might result in a slightly different accrued amount than an Actual/365 convention. If your firm’s trading platform defaults to one while the clearing corporation uses another, your internal valuation will be misaligned with the exchange-traded settlement price.

This requires analysts to perform a ‘day count audit’ whenever moving between different asset classes, such as transitioning from Government Securities (G-Secs) to private corporate debentures, as the standard practice often varies by security type and market segment.1
