This is where the EV/EBITDA multiple becomes your most powerful diagnostic tool.

Enterprise Value (EV) represents the theoretical takeover price of a company. It accounts for both the equity held by shareholders and the debt obligations that a potential acquirer would need to assume, net of cash on hand. By dividing this by EBITDA—Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization—you strip away the influence of accounting choices and financing structures. This provides an ‘apples-to-apples’ comparison of operational efficiency, regardless of whether a company is financed by debt or equity.

In the Indian context, EV/EBITDA is particularly useful for capital-intensive industries like steel, cement, or telecommunications. Consider two cement plants with identical operating margins. The plant with high debt will show a much smaller net profit than its debt-free counterpart. When you use EV/EBITDA, you see the true cash-generating ability of the assets, allowing you to identify which company is actually priced more efficiently. It prevents the analyst from being misled by a firm’s financial engineering and keeps the focus strictly on operational performance.

When conducting your valuation, use this metric to identify discrepancies in how the market prices operational assets. A high EV/EBITDA compared to sector peers often signals that the market expects significant future growth or superior asset quality. Conversely, a low multiple might suggest a bargain, or it could reveal underlying operational distress that isn’t captured by simple share price movements. By layering this metric over your fundamental EIC framework, you develop a more robust investment thesis that survives the scrutiny of institutional portfolio managers.
