Understanding this shift is essential because it fundamentally altered how we interpret market volatility and order execution quality in our valuation models.

Screen-based electronic trading replaced the opaque, proximity-dependent execution of floor trading with a centralized, anonymous order-matching engine. When modeling a large-cap stock, the electronic order book allows us to assume near-perfect execution at the prevailing market price, provided the trade size doesn’t exceed the average daily volume significantly. However, when dealing with illiquid small-cap scrips, even in an electronic environment, the ‘depth’ of the order book remains a critical risk factor.

A thin order book on the terminal means that even with electronic matching, a sizable buy order can trigger a sudden spike in price, eroding the projected entry yield for your client.

Consider the impact on the ‘Efficient Market Hypothesis’ in the Indian context. Before screen-based systems, arbitrage opportunities between regional exchanges lasted for days due to slow information flow. Now, the electronic integration of exchanges means that price discrepancies are compressed into milliseconds. As advisers, we must recognize that while technology has refined the ‘how’ of trading, it has also raised the bar for ‘why’ we recommend a trade.

Your research must now account for the reality that the market price reflects global information almost instantaneously, leaving very little room for alpha generated purely through timing the order flow.
